September 2010: A New Era for the ACHE

Thank you for the great outpouring of sorrow and appreciation following the passing of our beloved leader Gil Boyne. An icon in the field, he did so much to mold our profession into what it is today. He felt that the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners was his crowning achievement, considering it's dynamic leadership in the field and all that this organization has been able to accomplish.

Now on this 30th Anniversary of the founding of the A.C.H.E., here are some important developments as we move forward in the post-Gil Boyne era. We are continuing again with the annual International Hypnotherapy Conferences beginning early next year, possibly as soon as January. We will announce dates and further details next month via newsletter and our website, www.hypnotistexaminers.com.

We are in the midst of a battle to protect hypnotherapy schools and other vocational schools in California from extreme regulations planned by the Board of Private Postsecondary Education that have threatened to force closure of hundreds of schools. We have been leading the way to such a degree that many schools representing other vocations and many concerned individuals have borrowed greatly from the ideas and language of the A.C.H.E. sample letters as a basis for their own letters to the B.P.P.E. and legislators. We have achieved major victories this summer, but more needs to be urgently done. The final period for public comment is ending September 14. Please see our New Legislative Activity page and consider helping with a letter of your own: hypnotistexaminers.com/legislation.html.

We are very pleased to announce that Randal Churchill is our new President, effective immediately. He was the first A.C.H.E. President, and worked closely with Gil Boyne over the past 40 years, including in the formation of this organization. Churchill is Founder and Director of the Hypnotherapy Training Institute, one of the oldest and most successful licensed hypnotherapy schools. He is author of the award-winning texts, Regression Hypnotherapy and Become the Dream, and the highly acclaimed Catharsis in Regression Hypnotherapy.

Randal Churchill stated, "It's a tremendous honor to again become A.C.H.E. President, especially at this pivotal time. We are the organization that required the first examinations and serious training standards for members, that developed the first certification of hypnotherapists, and that developed the first annual hypnotherapy conferences. Spanning three decades, we have been at the forefront in fighting restrictive legislation and in helping to promote constructive legislation. As we enter our fourth decade in the field, our outstanding team - in place and being developed - is determined to further enhance the effectiveness of our organization. It's time to take the A.C.H.E. to the next level. Stay tuned for more major announcements in the weeks ahead."

Administrative director for over 30 years.

What is the A.C.H.E... Why it was created... Its function, purpose and direction

In 1973, the Hypnotist Examining Council was created as a non-profit professional organization engaging in self-regulation of all who utilized hypnosis/hypnotherapy as an integral part of a professional practice. The primary focus was on formal and appropriate education and training followed by a written exam and a practical demonstration of hypnosis skills before a Designated Examiner. A code of ethics and principles of practice were formulated and adopted.

Shortly afterward, Gil Boyne was elected President of the organization and, in 1980, he founded the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners, a national organization that now certifies more than nine thousand hypnotherapists worldwide, including numerous physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists and representatives of the healing arts, counseling and allied professions.

The A.C.H.E. is the primary organization that has been responsible for the recognition and regulation of hypnotherapy training in the USA. This organization is a state-chartered, non-profit professional corporation that has established standards for specialized education and maintains standards of practice and a code of ethics.

In addition, the A.C.H.E. provides examinations for hypnotherapists who have met the qualifications for specialized education, training, and experience. Successful completion of the written and practical demonstration examination before a Designated Examiner and signing the A.C.H.E. Code of Ethics leads to certification.

For examination and certification by A.C.H.E., a Hypnotherapist must be trained in a school approved by the A.C.H.E. The A.C.H.E. only approves schools that have programs of at least 200 hours of training in hypnotherapy that is almost entirely in the classroom.

Certification as a Clinical Hypnotherapist requires not less than 300 hours of training that is almost entirely in the classroom. It is the highest level of certification awarded.

The A.C.H.E. has developed a membership in over 40 countries throughout the world. Graduates of approved schools are eligible to receive certification and, if they provide hypnotherapy services to the general public, are considered to be professional hypnotherapists. Also, our membership includes many professionals in the health and counseling fields who have integrated hypnotherapy into their practices after receiving training at A.C.H.E.-approved schools.
